According to the temple histories, this is the site of Kinshoji Temple, which was founded before Todaiji Temple was built, and it is the oldest among the Todaiji Temple structures. On a map dating to 752, it was referred to as Kensaku-do and was a hall used to enshrine Fukukensaku-kannon (Amoghapasha) as the primary deity of worship. It came to hold the Hokke-e, an important ceremony in the third month of the lunar calendar, and thus it has come to be called the Hokke-do (Hokke Hall) or Sangatsu-do (Third Month Hall).
