Shiki's garden

sp045.jpg

Masaoka Shiki, who spent 35 years in his short life aiming to innovate the Japanese language, including haiku, tanka, and writing, stopped in Nara on his way back to Tokyo in October of Meiji 28, and stayed at one of the oldest inns, Taizanro, where he left many phrases such as "Akikuru Nara Ryokan and the taste of persimmons." The above monument was erected on the site, and the flowers that Shiki liked to chant were planted mainly on the old persimmon tree that seems to have existed from that time, and the garden has a borrowed view of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple and Mt. Wakakusa.
