Event information

The Brush Festival is held at Sugawara Tenmangu once a year in Nara, the birthplace of calligraphy brushes in Japan. There is a ritual burning of old brushes steeped in gratitude for their service, and prayers are offered for the improvement of calligraphy skills. Here you can offer old brushes, exchanging them for new ones, as well as observe and try your hand at traditional calligraphy brush and ink making.
